Biography

Charlotte Slade was born in Beaminster, Dorset in 1825. She was the daughter of Thomas Slade and Esther Vile

At the time of the 1841 England and Wales Census, Thomas, Esther, Charlotte, Sophia, James, Elizabeth, and Sarah Ann Slade were listed as living in Burstock, Dorset^[1].

At the time of the 1851 England and Wales Census, Esther, Charlotte, John, Sophia, James, Elizabeth, and Sarah Ann Slade were listed as living in Chideock, Dorset, along with a boarder^[2]. At the time of the census, Charlotte's occupation was listed as "School Mistress".

Charlotte married Matthew Clarke on 2 September 1856, and their marriage was registered in Yeovil, Dorset in the third quarter of 1856^[3].

At the time of the 1861 England and Wales Census, Matthew, Charlotte, Charlotte, and Matthew John Clarke were listed as living in Chideock, along with Charlotte's sister, Sophia Watts, Sophia's daughter Sophia Watts, and Edith Watts, and a servant^[4]. (Edith was listed as Matthew and Charlotte's niece, but was also listed as 7 years older than Charlotte's sister Sophia, so she was probably Sophia's sister-in-law.)

At the time of the 1871 England and Wales Census, Charlotte, Charlotte S, and Matthew J Clarke were listed as living in Chideock, along with Charlotte's nephew and niece Howard J and Elizabeth S Harris, a boarder, and a servant^[5]. At the time of the census, Charlotte was listed as a widow, and her occupation was listed as "Schoolmistress".

Charlotte died in Chideock on 24 April 1880. Her death was registered in Bridport, Dorset in the second quarter of 1880^[6]. She was buried in Chideock on 30 April 1880^[7]
