Biography

Joan Matthew Slater was born on 6 December 1865. She was the daughter of James Slater and Elizabeth Matthew.

She married divorcee Bruce Seton-Smith in 1888 in Richmond, Surrey, England^[1].

They appear to have had no children.

In the UK 1891 Census Joan Smith (aged 25) was living with her husband Bruce Seton-Smith (28) at 10 Chisholm Road, Richmond, Surrey. Also in the household was 23 year old Elizabeth Chaplin.

Her husband died later that year, on 1 August 1891.

Joan married, secondly, Dr. Thomas Hancock Arnold Chaplin (the son of Abraham Thomas Chaplin and Martha Elizabeth Gayfer) on 17 November 1898 at St. Mary's Church in the parish of Fulham, London, by Licence^[2].

In the 1901 England Census Joan Chaplin (aged 34) was living with her husband Arnold Chaplin (36 and a Phyisican) at 98 Great Barons Road, Fulham, London. Also in the household was one visitor, James Slater (32 and a Secretary) and one servant.

Their marriage was shortlived.

Joan may have passed away in 1908 at the age of 43^[3].
