Mary Poythress, a widow, married Robert Wynne and had by him at least four children: Robert, Thomas, Joshua, and Mary (mother of George Woodlief). Robert Wynne's will, dated 1 July 1675, probated in England on 15 Aug. 1678,
"identifies Robert Wynne as of Jordan's Parish, Charles City Co., VA, and asks that he be buried in the Jordan's church near his son Robert. To his oldest son Thomas, he leaves a farm in Whitestaple Parish near Canterbury, England, called Limbet Banckes, along with two houses in Canterbury in St. Mildred's Parish. To son Joshua he leaves a house and oatmeal mill in Dover Lane outside St. George's, Canterbury, called the Lilly Pot, and two tenant houses. Sons Thomas and Josuah are also left property in VA, the latter receiving the plantation called George's. To his daughter Mary Woodlief, he leaves a servant, and to Mary's son George he also leaves property. The rest of the estate went to Robert Wynne's wife and extrx. Mary. The overseers of the estate were to be Thomas Grendon and Robert Wynne's son-in-law [i.e., stepson] Capt. Francis Poythress."[1]
Mary Frances Sloman, daughter of John and Katherine (Epes) Sloman, married (1) Francis Poythress and (2) Robert Wynn.[citation needed][2]
Maiden name unknown. Because "Sloman" appears as a given name in Poythress and Wynn families after marriage to Mary, Sloman appears most likely candidate.[3]
"After Mary and Robert [Wynne]’s marriage, there followed a lawsuit in the rights of Mary Poythress Wynne over her inheritance. The lawsuit was with Francis and William Epes. 'Att a Co’rt holden att mercht hope 10br: 3rd; 1658, p. 162. Capt. Jo: Woodleife and Mr. Geo. Potter app. To examine dif betw. Capt. Robt. Overview of Wynne Family in England
from W. D. Lindsey, indsch19[at]ally.ios.com, posted: Wed, 12 Mar 1997 (available through the Wayback Machine:
Most of what I am summarizing here is from two published studies by cousins of mine: Charles Arthur Wynn, Jr. and Louise Tompkins Wynn, A FAMILY HISTORY OF THE WYNNS (WINN, WYNNE) OF VIRGINIA, NORTH CAROLINA, AND GEORGIA AND OTHER RELATED LINES (712 Bluefish Dr., P.O. Box 28025, Panama City Beach, FL 32411); and Frederick Ware Huff, FOUR FAMILIES: WINN, THOMAS, WARE, GARRETT OF THE SOUTHERN UNITED STATES FROM 1600S TO 1993 (Kennesaw, GA; 1993). Charles and Louise Wynn note that much of their research on the English background of the family reproduces information in John Bennett Boddie, VIRGINIA HISTORICAL GENEALOGIES (Baltimore: Geneal. Publ. Co., 1965), 174-7.
These sources say that the Wynne family is first mentioned in the records of Canterbury, England, in 1356, when John Wynne appears as a member of Parliament from Canterbury. From then to Robert Wynne, Mayor of Canterbury in 1599, the name appears often in the records of Canterbury.
Roebert Wynne, mayor of Canterbury, was the grandfather of Col. Robert Wynne, speaker of the House of Burgesses in VA in 1661-74. It was this Robert Wynne who m. Mrs. Mary Poythress.
The Wynnes were members of the Wollendrapers Guild of Canterbury. Robert Wynne, mayor of Canterbury was buried at St. Georges in Canterbury on 6 Sept. 1609, his unnamed wife being buried two days later (Wynns, citing St. Georges Psh. Register).
Thomas Wynne, his son, married Mary Wickham of Faversham, Co. Kent, at Onspringe on 20 July 1613 (citing Canterbury Marriage Licenses, 1568-1618, p. 458).
On 20 July 1629, Mary Wickham was buried, and Thomas Wynne of the Almony of St. Augustine, Canterbury, married the widow of James Nichols at St. Martins in Canterbury on 26 Oct. 1629.
On 12 Aug. 1620, Thomas Wynne's brother Peter was married to Martha Coppin, daughter of William Coppin of St. Margarets, Canterbury. The marriage was at St. Mathins church in Canterbury. Peter Wynne's son Robert, speaker of the House in Virginia, was christened at St. Dunstans, Canterbury on 28 Dec. 1622. Peter Wynne was buried at St. Georges on 30 May 1638.
William Coppin, father of Martha, was buried at St. Georges on 18 March 1633. The Wynns say that a memorial tablet to him is in St. Georges, and is mentioned in Hasted's History of Kent, vol. 4, p. 170. The Wynns also note that William Coppin was also probably the grandson of John Coppin, member of Parliament from Canterbury from 1553-4.
Epes Family
Note from Epes Family:
"Robert Hovenden, ed., The Visitation of Kent, Taken in the Years 1619-1621 (Harleian Society, Publications, XLII; London, 1898), p. 157. No record of children by her (2) marriage has been found but a suit brought in Virginia by John Sloman, Gent., against John, Francis and Thomas Epes was ordered to be continued 3 Aug 1658 (Charles City Co. Order Bk. 1655-65, p. 150). By 3 Dec 1658 he was deceased for Capt. John Woodleife and Mr. George Potter were appointed to examine the differences between Capt. Robert Wynne for the estate of Mr. John Sloeman, deceased, and Mr. Francis Epes and Mr. Thomas Epes and report to the next court (ibid., p. 162). John Sloman had witnessed a bond from Thomas Nothway to Daniel Llewellin on 12 June 1655 (ibid., p. 95). On 8 June 1663 Capt. Robert Wynne was granted a certificate for 600 acres establishing the importation of John Sloman twice (ibid., p. 384). This John Sloman may be the husband of Katherine (Epes) Maplesden Sloman, although since a Katherine Sloman married a Samuel Tilden on 14 Nov 1639 at Ashford (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, International Genealogical Index, microfiche, Kent, England), Katherine’s husband may have died before 1639 and the John mentioned in Virginia records in the 1650s may instead be a son. The relationship, if any, has not been confirmed by research to date." — Dorman, John Frederick, Ancestors and Descendants of Francis Epes I of Virginia, pp. 40-43.
The Wynne Family of Virginia led to a transcript of Robert Wynne's will signed 1 July 1675. "Endorsed at a court held at Westover 3 August 1675, by the Justices of Charles City County. Proved in court by Thomas Brome and John Burge, and probate granted to the administratrix. Test. James Minge. Entered in the records of the said court. Certified a true copy, 12 May 1677. James Minge, John Rudde, John Sherman. Probate 15 August 1678 to Mary Wynne (now in Virginia) by Thomas Crane her deputy, she being the widow of Robert Wynne, deceased in Virginia."
Transcript spells name as Woodleish (Roberth's daughter Mary Woodleish and grandson George Woodleish).
John Woodliffe (ca. 1650-1738): Pastor in Prince George Co VA. ... Son of John and Mary (Wynne) Woodliffe, John (born c1673), married Mary Poythress, daughter of John and Christian (Peebles) Poythress.
John (m Mary Wynne) was son of John Woodlief who died in 1676, in Bacon's Rebellion. From Ann M. Woodlief's page:
"In 1661 he commanded the [Charles City] County Regiment as Capt Lt. In 1664 he was taken to court for getting his servant Ann Berrey with child and was ordered to pay a fine. He went with John Lanier to ask Governor Berkeley for permission to go against Indians. Being refused and called fools and loggerheads, they took Nathaniel Bacon as their leader and went without commission. He died during Bacon's Rebellion (See Va. Rec. Bk. p. 284-8, Ch City Mil 16, 55-1665. Was in Cp. Francis, Gray's Co)"
"Joshua [Wynne]’s older brothers were Thomas and Robert, who died before his father. Their sister Mary married Captain John Woodlief who participated and died in Bacon’s Rebellion."
Tyler's Virginia Biography
Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography (page 365):
Wynne, Captain Robert, came from Kent, England, where he had several houses in Canterbury, and was burgess for Charles City county from 1658 to 1675, being, during the entire existence of Virginia's "Long Parliament," 1661-1675, speaker of the house of burgesses. He married a widow, Mary Poythress, and had sons, Thomas and Joshua, and a daughter who married Woodlief (see "Virginia Magazine of History and Biography," xiv, 173).

Ido not always get the same mail on my phone as I do on my Kindle or computer so my tardiness in responding is reflective of that. Thank you for that input. It is confirmation that my wife and I were related back 400 years ago. I intend on using this data as sourse information in my tree. Thanks again.
Slowman-13 and Sloman-1 appear to represent the same person because: different spelling/birth years, but same person nonetheless. Please merge. Thanks!
Sloman-1 and Poythess-1 appear to represent the same person because: I'm not finding any support for my lesser-developed theory, so I'll go with her maiden name being Sloman. Thanks for letting me look into the alternative. Cheers, Liz

Text: has birthdate for Mary as being ca. 1610-1622, Death aft 1678, Charles City, VA. Age: 68. Widow of Francis Poythress other spouses: Robert Wynne Colonel,
The maiden name of the widow Mary Poythress has not been proved. Several
have been suggested but none proved. If Robert and Mary's son had a son named Sloman, which many researchers believe, then Sloman would be a good choice for Mary but only a guess.
Also, reference in Chapter 14 (see http://www.tc.umn.edu/~timsx001/Epes.html ) says Katherine Epes didn't have children by her second husband (John Sloman). With Mary Frances b 1610 & Epes/Sloman m 1615, I think we can rule out Epes as her mother.
John Sloman & Katherine Epes married 1615, so 1610 birth year for Mary Frances is wrong if those are her parents, but they may not be (one reference from http://www.tc.umn.edu/~timsx001/Epes.html says that Katherine had no children by her 2nd marriage).
Poythess-1 and Sloman-1 are not ready to be merged because: I changed my mind about merging Mary Poythress & Mary Sloman without additional research. I'm not convinced that these were the same woman. I don't think their respective sons should merge (or be removed from their purported father). Thanks!
Poythess-1 and Sloman-1 appear to represent the same person because: In light of the proposed merge of son Joshua, the two mothers shown for him should merge. Sloman-1 shows that Mary Frances Sloman married twice: (1) Francis Poythress (normally spelled with the "r") & (2) Robert Wynne, although the statement is marked with "citation needed".
Sloman-101 and Sloman-1 appear to represent the same person because: the birth years are way off, but otherwise these are a match. Please merge them. Thanks!

I don't think Sloman was married to both Robert Wynne & Francis Poythress. Francis married Sloman & Rebecca Wynne (see comments on Robert's profile)
