"John Small came from Maryland to Shelby County, Kentucky, with his parents who died there. While in that county, he was a riverman, that is, he would load a flatboat with Kentucky produce, float it down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans, there sell his boat and its cargo, then with a pouch full of silver and rifle in hand, walk home. The 1800 census shows him to be in Shelby County at that time. About 1810 he came to southwestern Logan County and began farming. His land (known as the Shackleford farm in 1969) lay beside the Russellville-Clarksville road where it crosses the Logan-Todd county line, some eight miles north of Tennessee's northern border. He added to his holdings, built a horse powered gristmill, and laid out a family cemetery. He planted corn, cotton, flax, grain, and tobacco, and raised pigs, poultry, and livestock, all with the help of a large family."[1]
