Biography

Cautionary Note: Edward Small's mother is reflected as Abigail Snow . This is a possible name, not proven, and is in wide use on line. Cautionary Note: Abigail Barnaby is sometimes given as wife of Edward Small. This also is in wide use. Abigail's Last Name at Birth as Barnaby may be a possible, but documentation is lacking. Adrian Stanley, 17 July 2015.

[Small] [Issue] 5. "Edward 4 , who received, with his brother John and Anthony Strout, three ninth parts of his father's land. He also removed to Cape Elizabeth, and had many distinguished descendants."

[Daniel Small] ".... At the same time he conveyed to his sons, "John Smally and Edward Smally," and his son-in-law, Anthony Strout, "Whale Fishermen," of Provincetown, for £70, three ninth parts of the same lands; and, for £50, to his minor sons, "Elisha Smally and Benjamin Smally," two ninth parts. These three deeds were recorded on the same day, August 7, 1730. (York County Deeds; Book 14: 154.)"

Page 102. Edward* Small. The wife of "Edward Smole," of Provincetown, was Abigail ; they removed to Falmouth (Cape Elizabeth) probably at the same time as his brother John. Four children were born in Provincetown, and several in Falmouth ; as the latter were not recorded, there may have been others besides those mentioned.

II. "Micho" later called Micah or Michael, b. April 6, 1733, in Provincetown. The marriage intention of " Micah Small and Hannah Higgins" was recorded March 24, 1757, in Falmouth (Cape Elizabeth). Issue:

I. Hannah^, b. July 22, 1758, in Falmouth.

2. Abigail^, b. July 21, 1760, in Falmouth.

3. "Micha"^, b. Aug. 20, 1761, in Falmouth; d. June 21,

1784.

4. Reuben Higgins *, b. Aug. 18, 1764, in Falmouth; d. June,

1787.

5. Edward^, b, Aug. 9, 1766, in Cape Elizabeth. He appears to have been the "Edward Small Jun'," of Cape Elizabeth, who was mar. June 17, 1790, by Rev. Ephraim Clark, to "Miss Sarah Small." She was daughter to Thomas ° and Sarah* (Roberts) Small, of Cape Elizabeth.

6. Anna^, b. May 3, 1769, in Cape Elizabeth.

7. Betty', b. July 30, 1771, in Cape Elizabeth.

8. Prudence ^ b. Sept. 21, 1773, in Cape Elizabeth.

III. Job*, b. Sept. 9, 1734, in Provincetown. He probably was the Job Small who mar. (intention June 17, 1757), in Falmouth, Hannah Gray, of that town. He was mar., second, Feb. 25, 1764, by Rev. Ephraim Clark (pastor of the church at Cape Elizabeth), to Mercy Westcott, of Castine, Maine, daughter to William Westcott, of Cape Elizabeth. In 1768, he moved to Deer Isle, Maine, where he spent the remainder of his days.

Issue by second wife:

1. Andrew, b. Dec. 20, 1764, in Falmouth. He married, first, Hannah Crockett; mar., second, in 1838, Sally Greenlaw, widow of Joseph Greenlaw; he d. 1848.

2. Benjamin, b. July 15, 1766, in Falmouth; d. Feb. 4, 1788, in Deer Isle.

3. Samuel (twin), b. Aug. 30, 1768, in Deer Isle. He mar., first, July, 1794, in Deer Isle, Sarah Crockett, sister to Hannah; they were daughters to Captain Robinson Crockett. Samuel Small mar., second, Sept. 24, 1824, Sarah C. Howard; he d. 1854, in Deer Isle.

4. Job (twin), b. Aug. 30, 1768, in Deer Isle. He mar. (intention June 15, 1799), Catherine Banker (or Bunker); he d. in Stockton, Maine.

5. Edward, b. June 22, 1770, in Deer Isle. He mar. May 12, 1792, Hannah Colby, daughter to Joseph and Sarah (Thurston) Colby.

6. Naylor, b. April 12, 1772, in Deer Isle. He mar. Sept. 16, 1797, Eunice, daughter to Levi Gorman (?); he d. July 8, 1863, in Deer Isle.

7. Mercy, b. April 15, 1774, in Deer Isle; d. Jan. 23,1778.

8. Alice, b. May 17, 1776, in Deer Isle. She was mar. July 13, 1808, in Deer Isle, to Captain John Webster.

9. William (twin), b. Nov. 14, 1779, in Deer Isle.

10. Michael (twin), b. Nov. 14, 1779, in Deer Isle. He mar. (intention Nov. 2, 1807) Deborah Perkins, of Castine; they lived on the homestead of his father.

IV. Edward, b. April i, 1736, in Provincetown ; d. young.

V. Edward b. July 19, 1739, in Falmouth. "Edward Small, Jr." mar. (intention Dec. 26, 1761) in Falmouth, Abigail * Jordan, b. about 1741, daughter to John^ Jordan and his first wife, Deliverance (Reading) Jordan, of Falmouth. His second wife was Margaret . Edward Small d. July 14, 1796, in Cape Elizabeth.

Issue: by first wife:

1. Deborah", b. Feb. 2, 1764, in Falmouth.

2. John^, b. April 10, 1771, in Cape Elizabeth.

3. Abigail ^ b. June 2, 1774, in Cape Elizabeth.

Issue by second wife:

4. Edward", b. Oct. 4, 1779, in Cape Elizabeth.

5. Elizabeth", b. Sept. 4, 1783, in Cape Elizabeth.

6. Lucy", b. Feb. 20, 1786, in Cape Elizabeth

VI. Thomas , [Small] b. about 1741, in Falmouth. The marriage intention of "Thomas Small & Sarah Roberts, both of Falmouth," was recorded May 15, 1762;* they were mar. March 10, 1763, by Rev. Ephraim Clark. Sarah Roberts probably was daughter to Ebenezer* and Sarah (Elwell) Roberts, of Falmouth. The connection was not so apparent when the family of Ebenezer* was written, as it is now, or Sarah would have been mentioned with the other children. Thomas Small removed to Deer Isle, about 1767 ; he settled " near the bar which lies across the mouth of what is now known as Small's Cove," on land which was occupied, in 1905, by his great-grandson, Enoch Small.

Thomas Small (also given Smawley) served, in the Revolutionary war, as 2d Lieutenant, Capt. Thomas Roben's [Robbins] (4th) CO., Col. Jonathan Buck's (5th Lincoln Co.) regt. of Mass. militia; list of ofiicers chosen in said regiment; ordered in Council July 23, 1776, that said officers be commissioned; reported commissioned July 23, 1776." § Thomas Small died March 23, 1827, in Deer Isle.

I. Mary", b. Jan. 10, 1764, in Falmouth. She was married to Micajah Lunt, of Newburyport ; she d. in 1859, in Deer Isle.

2. Thomas", b. May 9, 1768, in Deer Isle. He mar. Jan. I, 1793, in Deer Isle, Anna Saunders, daughter to Thomas and Hepzibah (Chase) Saunders. Thomas Small d. March 8, 1846.

3. Sarah®, b. , in Deer Isle. She was mar. June 17, 1790, by Rev. Ephraim Clark, to her cousin, Edward ® Small, Jr., of Falmouth, son to Micah ^ and Hannah Small.

4. Ebenezer®, b. April 30, , in Deer Isle. This name was not common in the Small family; he probably was named for his mother's father, Ebenezer* Roberts, of Cape Elizabeth. Ebenezer Small mar. Jan. 23, 1792, in Deer Isle, Ann, daughter to Ebenezer Webster. Captain Ebenezer Small (master-mariner) lived on the homestead of his father; he d. Sept. 2, 1828.

5. Abigail®, b. March 17, 1774, in Deer Isle. She was mar. Nov. 20, 1798, to William Sellers; she d. about 1850.

6. Hannah®, b. Jan. 12, 1776, in Deer Isle. She was married to Joseph Randall; they removed to Bucksport, Maine, where she died.

7. Betsey®, b. Jan. 13, 1778, in Deer lsle. She was married, about 1809, to George C. Choate.

8. William ®, b. Sept. 9, 1782, in Deer Isle. He married Lydia Colby, daughter to Joseph Colby, Jr. ; he d. about 1814; his widow was married to Israel Dorr, of Frankfort.

9. Joseph®, b. July 27, 1784, in Deer Isle. He mar. May 20, 1807, Mary Chase Pettingill, daughter to Benjamin and Abigail (Chase) Pettingill, of Newburv', Mass. Joseph Small d. 1807, in Surinam, leaving one son; his widow was married, second, to John Howard; third, to Samuel Small, Sr.

10. Lydia®, b. July 3, 1786, in Deer Isle. She was married to Simon Smith, of Deer Isle.

11. Benjamin®, b. , in Deer Isle. He mar. March 22, 1812, Mary M. Lunt, daughter to Enoch and Jane Lunt, of Newburyport; he d. about 1827. Several of their children settled in Massachusetts.*

Small-2021 and Small-662 appear to represent the same person because: They are both sons of the same parents with the same spouse name. Parents only had one son of the name and these represent duplicate entries.
