Charlotte (Smiles) Grant was born in 1861 in Tumut, NSW, Australia. Her parents were William Edward Smiles (1813 - 1872) and Ann Maria (Davis) Smiles (1828 - 1894).
Her brother was Richard Joseph Smiles (1863 - 1900).
