Name

HENRY SR. SMITH (HEINRICH1 SCHMIDT) was born August 27, 1760 in Dusemond, Hessin Kassel, Germany, and died December 05, 1830 in Upper John's Creek, Pike Co., KY. He was buried on Upper John's Creek, near the mouth of Gannon's Branch. He married (1) MOLLY MOZIER. He married (2) MARY "POLLY" HONAKER February 20, 1787 in Frederick Co., VA, daughter of HANS HONAKER and MARIA GOETZ. She was born Abt. 1768 in Frederick Co., VA, and died Abt. 1826 in Johns Creek, Pike Co., KY. She was buried on Upper John's Creek, near mouth of Gannon's Branch. The first certain record of Henry Smith Sr (whose signature to deeds sometimes appears to be Heinrich Schmidt) is the record of his marriage in Frederick Co., VA

Military Service

Rev War Hero from VA. He was a soldier during the period around the American Revolution, serving first as a militiaman and later as an officer in the Continental Line. He saw action against the Indians and fought at the Battle of Cowpens, along with other battles. Its possible that Henry Smith was in the German Regiment commissioned by the Continental Congress in 1778.

Later, he may have become a spy during the Indian Wars.

A Henry Smith is mentioned in both contexts, but its not clear that it is *our* Henry Smith.

Occupation

Descendants state that Henry was a blacksmith, which is proved in Russell Co., VA deed. and in the records of the Moravians.

Henry Sr. and his son Henry Jr. took over the operation of Maynard's mill.

Land Grants

Shenandoah Co., Northern Neck Grants, 1780-88, pages 417-419, shows that on 4 June 1788, 237 acres, on Passage Creek, Powells Fort Valley, adjoining Henry Walters and John Spingler, was given to Henry Smith. Henry and Mary appears to have lived on Passage Creek, Shenandoah Co., VA until 1797. Henry's father also lived in Shenandoah Co., VA. Henry and family moved to Russell Co., VA and resided there until 1823, when Henry and some of his children moved to Pike Co., KY. Henry settled near the mouth of Meathouse Fork of Johns Creek.

While in Russell Co., VA, Henry had the following Land Grant; May 5, 1798, Grants 38, Page 373, 874 acres in Powells Valley between Powells Mountain and Wallins Ridge and on both sides of Wallens Creek. [3]

After moving his family to KY, Henry bought 100 acres of land from Moses Maynard. The land was located on Upper Johns Creek, near the mouth of Meathouse [4]
