John Robert Smith was born in Peebles, Scotland in 1875, son of Helen Bertram and Andrew Smith. [1]. He married Marion Mack in 1902 [2], having twin sons in the same year. The family emigrated to New Zealand on the Athenic in 1916[3] , taking up residence in Nelson where he worked as a clerk.[4]
He died in Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1968. [5]
