Robert John Smith was born on January 16, 1796 in England, son of Robert Smith, 1st Baron Carrington of Upton (1752–1838) and Anne Boldero-Barnard (<1756–1827).
He was educated at Eton College (1805-1811) and Christ's College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a MA in 1815. He was the MP for Wendover (1818-1820). for Buckinghamshire (1820-1831) and Wycombe (1831-1838). He succeeded to the barony of Carrington on 18 Sep 1838. On 26 Aug 1839 his name was legally changed to Robert John Carington by Royal Licence.
Robert married, secondly, Hon. Charlotte Augusta Annabella Drummond-Willoughby, daughter of Peter Robert Drummond-Burrell and Lady Sarah Clementina Drummond on 10 Aug 1840 at St. George's Church, Hanover Square, London.[3] When he married he gave his surname as Carington. He was Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire from 1838 until his death in 1868.
The Smith family adopted the surname 'Carington'. Note that the family name is spelled with one 'r' while the barony is spelled with two.
