Biography

Audrey was born in 1907. Audrey Smith ... She passed away in 1986. [1]

My mother Audrey actually thought her first name was Loa until she received a copy of her birth record when she retired and applied for social security at 62 years of age. There her name was Audrey Loa Smith. Everyone called her Audrey as her mother was called Loa as a nick name for Louisa.

Audrey worked in a factory making guns in 1943 to 1945 during the Second World War. She saved as much as she could so she and my Dad could buy a house of there own. They had been living in apartments. Then she stayed at home till 1954 when she got a job at Sibleys( a major clothing store) where she worked till she retired. She was a great Mom and my best friend. When I was in elementary school she was a Girl Scout leader.

In 1957 after i started working,Mom got a job at Sibleys store. She worked in an area where shemade change etc,She made many friends. After retirement she and dad took many trips to Las Vegas,Nevada .In the 1930s and 1940s we 3 girls and mom visited her family every summer for 2 weeks.Usually traveling on the Cobourg feary. We all enjoyed this so much.Dad usually had to work. When mom was 76 she became ill with cirrhosis of the liver and had some falls, breaking her ankles and arm.I suspect she had osteoporosis.Dad took care of her very well, doing the cooking, shopping and washing. On Feb 10,1985 she passed away. She is buried in White Haven cemetery. She was a dear friend and Mom to us.We miss her so much.I know she is with my dad,Married 61 years and her family and her beloved dog Major
My Mom was a quiet, calm person. She came to Rochester,ny in the summer of 1924 to babysit her uncle Perce Etcher's children. Here she met my dad at a dance.OnJan.14,1925 they were married and it was discovered that she needed to return to her home in Port Hope,Ont. Canada to straighten out the paper work to come back to Rochester,ny.Which she did.The family had a great old italian reception for them and she was queen for the day. They lived with his family for a year or so.This was hard for her as she spoke no Italian, but learned enough to know what they were talking about. After their first daughter was born on March 30,1926,they moved to their own apartment where 2 more daughters were born.In 1943 mom worked for a gun making factory and they bought their first home.
