DECENDANTS OF JAMES BENNETT SMITH: .3. Joseph Preston "Dock" Smith, third child of Bennett Smith and Martha G. Underwood Smith, was born Sep. 3, 1876. He died ay 8, 1936 and is buried in Bartlebaugh Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tn. _n 1902 Dock Smith married Nettie Jane Sholtz who was born Aug. 29, 1886 in Big Springs, Tn. Nettie Jane was the daughter of Henry holtz and Barbara Schoat. Nettie Jane Sholtz Smith died Feb. 1, 1966 and is buried in Bartlebaugh Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tn. (Note from ileen Millard June 1, 198~: "Sholtz is spelled Sholts, Sholtz and Shoat. I have always thought Sholtz was correct. Barbara Schoat was one-half Cherokee Indian."). After Dock Smith died in 1936 Nettie Jane married George washington Gardenhire oct. 31, 1938. George is buried in Tyner, Tn. Dock Smith was a school teacher and farmer in East Chattanooga, Tn. The 1928-1929 Chattanooga City Directory gives his address as Rt. #2, East Chattanooga and lists his occupation as a teacher at Amicola School in East Chattanooga. He also taught for many years at Hamilton School. He and Nettie Jane were members of Bartlebaugh Baptist Church. Dock Smith's old home place at Rt. 2 Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tn. was bought by the Tennessee valley Authority March 15, 1937 to build Chickamauga Dam which formed Chickamauga Lake. J. P. "Dock" Smith and Nettie Jane Sholtz Smith had eleven children:

(p. 31). Dorothy Frances Smith, born March 5, 1917. (32 - 33). Mamie Aileen Smith, born Feb. 18, 1919. (p. 34). Robert Samuel Smith, born Jan. 21, 1921. (p. 35 - 37).
