John Cole ( J.C. as he was referred to by his parents, siblings, and wife), was the oldest son of Joe Smith and Royce Reed. He married Lucille Barrett on October 23, 1939. [2] When they were first married, they lived in a small shack just down the hill from his parents' house. The land was owned by his father.
John joined the Navy during World War II and became an electrician. During the war, his hair turned from red to white overnight . He also broke both his legs when a bomber he was in crashed. [3]
During the 1950's the family relocated to Michigan for better job opportunities. After John retired, he and Lucille moved back down to Georgia. John grew grapes during his retirement and told his daughter-in-law, June Hurley Smith that he grew them to make wine, but Lucille kept picking them first to make jelly instead.[4]
In 1983, John went into the hospital in Ashville for surgery. During the night following his surgery, he apparently woke up in a panic and had a fatal heart attack. He was buried on Father's Day, June 19, 1983, in the family plot at Spring Creek Baptist Church, in Trion, Chattooga County, Georgia. [5]
