Biography

John was born in 1915. John Smith ... He passed away in 1983. [1]

John Cole ( J.C. as he was referred to by his parents, siblings, and wife), was the oldest son of Joe Smith and Royce Reed. He married Lucille Barrett on October 23, 1939. [2] When they were first married, they lived in a small shack just down the hill from his parents' house. The land was owned by his father.

John joined the Navy during World War II and became an electrician. During the war, his hair turned from red to white overnight . He also broke both his legs when a bomber he was in crashed. [3]

During the 1950's the family relocated to Michigan for better job opportunities. After John retired, he and Lucille moved back down to Georgia. John grew grapes during his retirement and told his daughter-in-law, June Hurley Smith that he grew them to make wine, but Lucille kept picking them first to make jelly instead.[4]

In 1983, John went into the hospital in Ashville for surgery. During the night following his surgery, he apparently woke up in a panic and had a fatal heart attack. He was buried on Father's Day, June 19, 1983, in the family plot at Spring Creek Baptist Church, in Trion, Chattooga County, Georgia. [5]

Enter a personal reminiscence or story.
He loved to play poker. I remember seeing him and the three younger boys (and later his son-in-law joined as well) playing at the picnic table under the willow tree in the back yard. He would usually rob them all blind, but they always went back and played again.

He enjoyed hot peppers and each time we went to visit, he would get my mom to try one of his latest batches. He loved it when she said one was too hot for her.
