Biography

Martha Smith was born in 1842. The first known record of her was the 1861 census at Cobourg, Ontario. It showed she was a servant for the family of J.J. Wallace and Julia Wallace; age 22, born in Scotland, and a member of the Free Church.

That same year, Martha Smith married another servant, John Clazie. They went on to have 4 children: Isabella Jane Clazie; James Clazie, Martha Clazie; and Margaret Clazie. Her husband, John Clazie, died in 1875.

Martha remarried in 1880 to Samuel Evans at Paisley, Ontario but they had no children. This second marriage certificate said Martha was born in Ireland. John Evans died in 1899.

Martha passed away in 1920. At the time of death she lived with her son James Clazie in Saugeen Township, near Port Elgin, Ontario. She was buried at Sancturary Park, Port Elgin. The tombstone showed "Martha Smith, wife of John Clazie". It made no mention of the Evans surname. [1]
