Biography

Drowned in Pawtuxet River; Providence, Rhode Island

Removed incorrect parents ~ I was unable to find a baptism record for Thomas with the Christopher Smith family in Stratford Upon Avon[1]. In addition, two yDNA tests for descendants of Thomas do not match the tests in the Christopher Smith lines, SmithConnections Northeastern group NE18. Instead, the two tests for descendants form group NE87. Because of the lack of baptism record and the two non-matching yDNA tests, I have removed Christopher Smith-27264 and Alice Gibbes-29 as the parents of this Thomas Smith. His genetic parents are unknown at this time. Cooper-1 13:18, 10 May 2017 (EDT)

Thomas Smith was a resident of Warwick, R. I., at an early date.  He was a tailor by trade. On December 20, 1661, he witnessed the confirmatory deed of Roger Williams to his associates.  On July 9, 1666, he and his wife, Ruth Wickenden, received a deed from her father, William Wickenden, of certain land on the south side of the Pawtuxet river, bounded partly by Benjamin Smith's land.  Thomas Smith and his wife, Ruth, were drowned in the Pawtuxet river near their home on January 16, 1670, the wife losing her balance and falling into the water in an attempt to save her husband. His house and lands were sold by order of the town council, for £40, to provide for his children. He married (intentions published January 27, 1659) Ruth, daughter of William Wickenden, and their untimely death left four small orphans: John, born August 4, 1661, died unmarried; Thomas, August 9, 1664; William, January 10, 1667; and Joseph.
