Biography

(Southside Virginia Families, Vol I, Boddie, Balto. Gen. Publ. Co, 1966, THE NICHOLAS SMITH FAMILY, pg 371): "3. Cuthbert Smith, son of William and Ann Smith, married, first Elizabeth Chamberlayne, daughter of Samuel Chamberlayne. (d. 1752) of Brunswick, Va. He married secondly, Elizabeth Washington Lanier, widow of Sampson Lanier,[1] and daughter of Richard Washington, only son of John Washington who married Mary of the four distinguished husbands. Cuthbert's will was probated in Brunswick in 1780. He named wife, Elizabeth, and children: Charles [by Elizabeth Washington Smith]; Stephen; Janey; Frederick; Benjamin; Sarah; Lucy; Mary, Susannah, Anne; Elizabeth; and Frances, who married Thomas Hill." (Other sources dispute this second wife, saying that the Elizabeth Lanier who Cuthbert married was born Elizabeth Chamberlain, the widow of Sampson Lanier Jr., son of Sampson Sr. and Elizabeth Washington.)

(Source known only as, "Smith Papers, Vol 14, Issue 3, page 28," unknown author): "Stephen Smith was the son of Cuthbert Smith by his first wife (name unknown) [Elizabeth Chamberlain/Chamberlayne]. After the death of his first wife Cuthbert Smith (M) Elizabeth Chamberlyn [sic] Lanier, daughter of Samuel Chamberlyn and widow of Sampson Lanier, Jr. Elizabeth has at least 7 children by Lanier and she and Cuthbert had 9 more. (there were 4 earlier ones by his lst wife.)" [Stephen may have been on the staff of George Washington during the Revolution.]

(Deed Book 3, p. 48, Brunswick Co, VA ): Cuthbert Smith and Elizabeth his wife of Brunswick to John Langley, 180 acres. wit: John burch, Charles King. 1 Aug 1745

(Deed Book 6, p.522, Brunswick Co, VA): Indenture made the 27th day of May, 1760, between Cuthbert Smith, and Elizabeth [Washington Lanier], his wife, and John Smith, son of the said Cuthbert.

According to an article in Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Cuthbert was the second husband of Elizabeth Chamberlain and served as guardian for her daughter Rebecca from her first marriage to Sampson Lanier.[2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Cuthbert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Cuthbert:

Smith-141622 and Smith-39601 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same person.
Cuthbert was married to Elizabeth Chamberlain (his second marriage) in 1758 and she was married to Samson Lanier Jr. Samsons mother was Elizabeth Washington, she was married to Samson Lanier Sr. and not to Cuthbert. Elizabeth Washington Lanier sued Elizabeth Chamberlain Lanier Smith when she married Cuthbert over the dower left by her son Samson to Elizabeth. I am still researching Cuthberts first wife, there is not enough information that proves who she was. It definitely was not Elizabeth Washington.
