Mary was born about 1866 at Duart, Kent County, Ontario, Canada. She is the daughter of James B. and Sarah Curtis.^[1]

Mary married John Jacob Ryckman on January 15, 1889 at Chatham, Kent County.^[1] They had three children together:

• Carl Gordon
• Rose
• Viola

In 1891, Mary and John, along with their children, Gordon and Rose lived at Ridgetown, Elgin County.^[2]
