Biography

Anna Arnold was born on 5 Oct 1717 in Providence, Rhode Island to a Quaker family. [1]

She married firstly Benjamin Smith (no relation) 24 Jun 1742, in Smithfield, Rhode Island.[2]

Children: Benjamin, Ruth, Amey.

Her second marriage was to Stephen Hopkins, in Smithfield, 2 Mar 1755. She was thirty-eight years old at the time. [3]

Children: Abigail, William, Mercy.

Stephen Hopkins became very fond of his stepchildren, and the sentiment was mutual. Anna's daughter Ruth Smith later married George Hopkins, the son of her stepfather, and her son Benjamin married Mary Tillinghast, a stepdaughter of Mr. Hopkins' daughter Lydia.[4]

She died on 20 Jan 1782 (gravestone) in Providence, Rhode Island at age 64 and was buried in the North Burial Ground in Providence.[5] [6]

Research: Gravestone and Rhode Island Vital Extracts disagree on dates of birth and death. Gravestone is followed here.
