The Biography of Mary Rebecca "Mayme" Smith Hamilton

Danford Smith and 4 Children

Mary Rebecca Smith was born on April 29, 1888, in Saxton, Pennsylvania. Her father was Danford Smith and her mother was Mary Frances Miller. [1]

When she was growing up, her family moved to Davis, West Virginia when her father took a job as a foreman to a lumber company. [2][3]

On 24 Feb 1909 she married William E. "Will" Hamilton in Tucker, West Virginia. [4] For a short while, the young family lived with Mayme's parents, the Danford Smith's. Their first child, Lettie Maxine Hamilton was born there in October, 1909. [5] They moved to Export, Pennsylvania, sometime between 1910 and 1920 where Will worked in a coal mine. [6] Their son, Ronald Guy Hamilton was born in 1911 and their second daughter, Virginia Lee Hamilton was born in 1924. [7]

I visited Aunt Mayme's house many times with my grandmother and father. They still had an outhouse, a two-seater, in the backyard. There was no indoor facilities. I remember a photograph of the Dionne quintuplets hanging on the wall in the outhouse. In the kitchen, Mayme had a sink that had a pump handle to pump the water into the sink. Her "living" room did not have a typical sofa with cushions. Instead it was a wooden bench with pillows on it. Mayme always had projects that she was working on. Quilts and dolls made with painted wooden spools were among them. I loved the dolls! Another thing that I remember about her kitchen, which was the hub of the home, was that she hung pictures that her grandchildren drew and colored on the walls. It was very homey! [8]

Mayme's 90th Birthday!

Mayme served for over 45 years as Democratic Committeewoman. She died on February 23, 1986, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, at the age of 97, and was buried in Delmont, Pennsylvania. [9]
