Charles Luvern Smith[1]was born on 28 June 1846 at Pennsylvania, USA.[2] He appeared on the census of 3 Sep. 1850 in the household of his parents, Albert Smith and Louisa (Pelton) Smith at Farmington Township, Tioga Co., Pennsylvania.[3] He appeared on the census of 14 Aug. 1860 in the household of his parents at Canisteo, Steuben Co., New York.[4] He appeared on the census of 10 Aug. 1870 in the household of his future father-in-law, Giles Haram Baxter and Phoebe Ann (Gregory) Baxter, at Colchester, Delaware Co., New York.[5]
He married Elsie Adaline Baxter, his second cousin and daughter of Giles Haram Baxter and Phoebe Ann (Gregory) Baxter, in Sep. 1871.[6][7]
He and Elsie appeared on the census of 30 June 1880 at Colchester, Delaware Co., New York.[8] Elsie died in Jan. 1881 and was buried at Baxter Neff Cemetery, Colchester.
Charles married Phebe Francisco, daughter of Richard Francisco and Susan (Steenrod) Francisco, circa 1882. Phebe had three prior marriages: John Hamilton, his brother George,and William Hill. She brought her five children with her joining the six of Charles and Elsie. Phebe and Charles had two more children. The family must have been successful as children when writing about other family members refer to them as brothers and sisters even when there was no biological connection.
Charles and Phebe appeared on the census of 16 Feb. 1892 at Colchester, Delaware Co., New York.[9] He and Phebe appeared on the census of 7 June 1900 at Colchester, Delaware Co., New York.[10] He was a farmer with his own farm when he and Phebe appeared on the census of 24 May 1910 at Colchester, Delaware Co., New York.[11] He and Phebe appeared on the census of 1 Jun 1915 at Colchester, Delaware Co., New York.[12]
Death
Accident.
Charles was struck by a train and died on 10 March 1916 at Horton, Delaware Co., New York, at age 69.[13] The coroner's report stated:
Smith, C. Laverne. 1916. Inquest held. Found a purse containing $15.60; one pocket knife; one match safe; one silver watch; same being turned over to the family of the deceased.[14]
He was buried at Cooks Falls Cemetery, Cooks Falls, New York, but there is no memorial there.
