Biography

Ruth Florence Smith was born on the 13th of October 1874 in Hobart, Tasmania. She was the first child born to her mother's second marriage. Her father, John Smith registered her birth on the 21st November 1874. He stated that his residence was Liverpool Street ( a street in central Hobart, Tasmania) and that his occupation was a seaman. At the time of Ruth's birth her mother had eight children from her first marriage to James Hammond, five sons and three daughters.

Ruth Florence Smith was baptised into the Catholic faith on the 6th of January 1875 in St Joseph's Church, Hobart, Tasmania. Her godparent was Margaret King and she was baptised by Chas. Woods the Chaplain of St Joseph's Church. Although her mother was a devout Catholic, Ruth Florence Smith did not remain in the Catholic faith.

Ruth Florence Smith and Alfred Thomas Maxfield were married in St David's Cathedral (Church of England), in Hobart, Tasmania on the 23rd of August 1898. At the time of her marriage she was living in Hobart, Tasmania and she stated that her occupation was a Housekeeper. She described her father's occupation as a Ships Mate and also stated that her place of birth was Hobart. She signed her name on the marriage record and the witnesses to her marriage were her sister Ada May Smith of Hobart and George Mays also of Hobart.

Children Not Yet Added - The last two children of Alfred Thomas Maxfield and Ruth Florence Smith have not been added as yet because currently their births are un-sourced. The two children not yet added are an un-named daughter born in Queenstown, Tasmania in 1914 and their last child Gordon Charles Maxfield born in Queenstown, Tasmania in 1916, When sources are located for their births they will then be added as the children of Alfred Thomas Maxfield and Ruth Florence Smith.
