Charles Smith served with Civil Service, North Carolina during the American Revolution.

Charles Smith, Sr. was born 30 August 1730 in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia.[1] His family Bible record gives the births, deaths and marriage for Charles, Ann, their children and related family members.[2]

Charles married Ann Mallory 18 March 1754 Orange Co., Virginia[3]

Charles Smith is listed as a resident of Albemarle Co., Virginia in 1780. The Household Remarks are: 10 Apr 1782, District No. 2: free males above 21=1; slaves=10; Number Cattle=17; Number Horses mares Colts & Mules=6; Number Wheels for Riding Carriags=0.[4]

On 24 February 1781, Orange County, Virginia Charles is mentioned in the Will of his father, Stephen J. K. Smith, asking his other children to give Charles his bequest.[5]

In 1786 Charles Smith is living in the Humphries District, Surry Co., North Carolina.[6]

Charles also appears on the 1790 First Census of the United States, NARA microfilm publication M637, 12 rolls, National Archives, Washington, D.C.

In 1810 Charles is on the Surry Co., North Carolina Census with 19 household members, 13 of them were slaves.[7]

Ninety year old Charles appears on the 7 August 1820 census with his slaves. There are a total 19 people in the household, 18 of them are slaves.[8]

Charles Smith, Sr. passed away 14 August 1829 at the age of 99 years. He is buried at the Smith Family Cemetery, Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina[9][10]
