Biography

Dewitt was born in 1855. He was the son of John Smith and Elvira Crofut. He passed away in 1944. [1]

(1900 Census, Gaines,Tioga County, PA): Smith, Dewitt C. age 44 born July 1855 PA, wife Leora age 33 born Sep 1886 PA, daughter Wanda age 10 born Dec 1889 PA.

(The Agitator [Wellsboro, PA, newspaper] Wednesday October 15, 1930, excerpted): "An Enjoyable Occasion. Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs. D.C . Smith entertained the following friends: Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Smith and daughter Sadie, of Gaines; Judge Howard Marsh, Mrs. Emma Champaign of Wellsboro; Mr. and Mrs. William O. Robinson of East Orange, N J Leland Rex Robinson and wife, of New York City. Judge Marsh, Mrs. Emma Champaign, Marshall M. Smith and his wife, Minnie Smith Robinson and D. C. Smith were all born at Marshlands Gaines Township. This was the first time in years when all have met and enjoyed a renewal of old friendship..."

(Wellsboro Gazette, 1944): "Dewitt C. Smith of Wellsboro, former treasurer of Tioga County and clerk to the county commissioner for 17 years, who just passed his 89th birthday, has had one grandson, five nephews, and two grand-nephews in the armed forces." They all call me Uncle Dewitt, except Jimmy Lowell, who always has called me Grampa Dewitt.' "

(Obituary, Wellsboro Gazette, Aug. 1949 Dewitt Smith County Leader Dies, W'bor, Death Mourned, DE WITT C. SMTIH, former Tioga County, Pa. Treasurer and leading Wellsboro churchman, who died Monday at 94. For many years he was a merchant at Marshlands):" WELLSBORO, Pa. - Dewitt C. Smtih, 94, one of Tioga County's most highly esteemed residents and former county treasurer and Chief Clerk of Tioga County for 16 years, died Sunday morning at his home, 11 McInroy Street, Wellsboro, following a two week illness.Born in Marshlands, July 11, 1855, he was the son of John and Elvira Crofut Smith. On September 20, 1885, he married the former Miss Leonora Snyder of Harrison Valley, who died in 1940. Coming to Wellsboro in 1902, he was elected county treasurer. Following his election as treasurer, he was employed as chief clerk in the county commissioners office in Wellsboro for 16 years. Before coming to Wellsboro, he operated a store in Marshlands. He was a faithful member of the First Methodist Church and was a member of the Men's Bible Class. Survivors include two daughters, Miss Wanda Smith, a teacher in the Pittsburgh public schools and Mrs. Floyd Lovell [Lowell] of Trenton, N.J.; one grandson, James Smith Lowell of Philadelphia; four brothers, Eugene of Kane; Charles of Wellsboro; Walter of Ovid, N.Y.; Dayton of Liberty; one sister, Miss Myra Smith of Pittsburgh, recently returned missionary to China; several nieces and nephews. The body is at the Bastian Funeral Home in Wellsboro, where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Charles E. Titus of the Methodist Church will officiate and interment will be made in the Wellsboro Cemetery."
