Biography

Gideon Lewis Smith was born November 28, 1769. He was the son of David Smith and Abigail Lewis. On November 15, 1793 he married Lois Barnes, the daughter of Jonathan Barnes and Elizabeth Woodruff.

"He lived in various localities after marriage, and about 1806 removed to East Mountain, Southington, where he resided until about 1824, when he removed to the north part of Cheshire, on the old home of his father (David Smith II), where Lois, his wife, died July 31, 1846, aged 74. He died January 20, 1851, aged 81, after having been for a long time deprived of speech by paralysis."[1]

(Commemorative Biographical Record of New Haven, CT, 18093, Chcago, J H. Beers & Cop, 1902, page 1023): ....."Gideon Lewis and Lois (Barnes) Smith, were also natives of Southington, and in 1823 moved to Cheshire, where he followed farming throughout the remainder of his life, dying there in 1850. His wife died in 1846."

(1820 Census, Southington, Hartford County, CT.): Smith, Gideon 1 male 10 to16, 1 male 16 to 18 [Loyal?], 1 male 16 to 26 [Rollin?], 1 male over 45 [Gideon], 1 female to 10 [Lois?], 1 female to 16 [Lola?], 1 female over 45 [wife Lois], 3 others.

(Parson Foot's Records, Cheshire, New Haven, CT): Gideon L. Smith died Apr 8, 1845 age 81

Gideon Lewis Smith died January 20, 1851 in Cheshire, at the age of 81.[2]
