Biography

LOUISA (LOUIZA) "LOU" SMITH, fifth child of Wm. B. Smith and Frances Elizabeth Bell Smith, was born April 1863 in Tenn. (From 1870 and 1880 Bradley County, Tn. Federal censuses). The 1900 James County, Tn. census gives her birthdate as 1870; obviously an error. In 1882 Lou married James F. Mason, who was born April 1860 in Tenn. and died ca. 1918 - 1919 in Chattanooga, Tn. He was the son of Nancy M. Mason. His mother, Nancy, was living with Lou and James at the time of the 1900 James County, Tn. census, enumerated June 2, 1900. On that census Nancy stated she was "63 years of age, born in virginia July 1836 and that she was a widow. She had only one child and he was living. Her father was born in Ky. and her mother in Va."
