Biography

Nathaniel Smith, son of Joseph and Lydia (Huit) Smith [1] was born in October, 1664 [2]

Nathaniel married Esther Dickinson on July 9, 1696. [1] Esther, daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Crow) Dickinson of Hadley, Massachusetts and Wethersfield, Connecticut was born on January 22, 1673/4. [3] [1]

Nathaniel and Esther's children were:

  1. Nathaniel, [1] born January 27, 1697 [2]; married Mary (___) about 1727. [3]
  2. Susannah [1] born on October 5, 1699 [2]; married Thomas Hale on July 11, 1721-2. [3]
  3. Esther [1] baptized March 30, 1701; died young. [3]
  4. Jerusha [1] baptized on September 6, 1702 [3]; named in the distribution of Nathaniel Smith's estate in November, 1721. [4]
  5. Abigail [1] born on December 4, 1704 [2] [3] ; named in the distribution of Nathaniel Smith's estate in November, 1721. [4]
  6. Mercy born in 1706 [1] baptized September 8, 1706 [3]; likely died before November 1721. [4]

  8. Joseph [1] baptized on November 13, 1709. [3]
  9. Esther baptized on March 10, 1712 [3]; likely died before November 1721. [4]

Nathaniel died in 1711 [3], probably very late in the year as his estate was inventoried on January 2, 1711/12.

The inventory of Nathaniel's estate was taken on January 2, 1711/12 and on January 7, 1711/12, administration was granted to widow Esther Smith and her brother Thomas Dickinson. His estate was assessed at L88.00.04. [4]

On April 7, 1713, administration was granted solely to widow Esther Smith, her brother Thomas Dickinson having neglected or having refused to give bond. [4]

After Nathaniel's death, Esther married second, on June 12, 1714, Hezekiah Porter of Hartford. [1] [3]

On November 7, 1721, Esther Smith, alias Porter, exhibited her accounting of the administration of her late husband Nathaniel Smith's estate. The estate was distributed among the following heirs: [4]

  • eldest son Nathaniel
  • sons Gideon and Joseph
  • daughters Jerusha, Susanna and Abigail Smith

Hezekiah Porter was appointed guardian to Abigail, Gideon and Joseph Smith, and as attorney for eldest Nathaniel Smith, set off the Nathaniel Smith Sr.s' homelot for Nathaniel Jr. [4]

Smith-6208 and Smith-12458 appear to represent the same person because: I think that the birth year for Smith-12458 is an estimate based on his spouse Esther.

Duplicate spouse Esther Dickinson Bio for Smith-6208 refers to daughter Susannah who is attached to Smith-12458
