I have information placing this James in Ontario Canada in 1901 making this not the James Susan (West) Smith mentions in her narrative above.

James Kirkwood Smith was my husband’s grandfather. Came to Australia about 1885 /1890 married Christina Mc Intosh in 1895 and had 4 children. He is buried in Brighton cemetery with his wife and 2 daughters

This James Smith and was my grandfathers brother and I have no knowledge of him moving from Canada to Australia. In 1885 he would have been 19.
