Elizabeth Smith has replaced Elizabeth Stockett as the wife of Thomas Plummer Senior. This is apparently due to some compelling research done by Agnes Winkelman and Gale Honeyman.[1] This book seems to be out of print as of January, 2021.[2] However, it hinges upon a 1703 deed naming Elizabeth Yate Plummer, the wife of Thomas Plummer Junior. Here is a clip from the original document, held at the Maryland State Archives:
Elizabeth Yate Plummer, daughter of George Yate, wife of Thomas Plummer II |
Elizabeth Smith Plummer was named in the 1694 will of her husband, Thomas Plummer. In the will, he is styled "Ploumer."[3] Therefore, she was known to be living at that time.[4]
Elizabeth Smith "Plumere" was named in the 1698 Maryland Will of her brother, John Smith. To quote this will, "In event of death of both brothers without issue estate to pass to sister Eliza: Plumere."
Surviving children of Thomas Plummer and Elizabeth Smith, as named in his 1694 Anne Arundel County, Maryland Will were as follows:
Thomas Plummer II, named in the will as "my only son."
Margaret Plummer Riley, named in the will as "my eldest daughter."
Mary Plummer Jackson, named in the will as "my second daughter."
Susanna Plummer Swanson, named in the will as "my third daughter."
Elizabeth Plummer, named in the will as "my youngest daughter."
There is quite a lot of controversy amongst descendants as to which Elizabeth (Smith, Stockett or Yate?) belongs to which Plummer. Here are some links to those discussions. Apparently, the current thought is that Elizabeth Smith belongs to Thomas Plummer I, the son of Walter Plummer and another Elizabeth Smith. It seems to have also been proven that Elizabeth, the daughter of Mary Wells Stockett Yate, was married to Thomas Plummer II. Another topic of discussion is that many believe that Elizabeth was actually the daughter of George Yate rather than Thomas Stockett. It sure makes for interesting reading. If new documents are uncovered, this could all be changed again!

I believe Winkelman and Honeyman are the preeminent authorities on this family. Here is a quotation from their book.
"For many years, it has been written that Thomas Plummer, the emigrant, married Elizabeth Stockett and their son Thomas Plummer Plummer married Elizabeth Smith. The authors, convinced that this was correct, included it in the article that they wrote in 1987 for the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin. Upon composing the biographical material from original sources for father and and son to use in compilation, it was at the last moment discovered that the two Elizabeth's were reversed. To compound matters further, Elizabeth Stocket upon closer examination is without foundation. Only one reference is found in which the emigrant Thomas is given with Elizabeth Smith as his wife, the 1892 Genealogy of the Griffith Family by R. R. Griffith. We assumed that the author was in err and did not pursue this course as all other authors gave her name as Elizabeth Stockett. One lone deed recorded in Baltimore County MD changed the records forever. Up to this point in time, its importance has been overlooked." To further elaborate on the above statement quoting from the book "The Thomas and Elizabeth (Smith) Plummer Family" by Agnes Winkelman and Gale Honeyman, the following text is from the 1703 deed that the book references in determining the wife of Thomas Plummer Jr (who it turns out must be a daughter of George Yate):
Baltimore County Land Records 1700-1704-Liber HW-2, page 309
1703 deed for "Rich Level" lot from Thomas and Elizabeth

Please note that Daniel Smith and Hannah Knapp who died in 1721 had thirteen children and none were named Elizabeth.
