Research Notes

Matilda’s last name at birth might actually be Bolen. She would then be Simeon’s stepdaughter, rather than his biological daughter. She appears in Simeon’s household as “Matilda Balin” in 1860. Simeon’s second marriage listed his wife as Jane Bolen. Matilda might be Jane’s daughter by a previous marriage.

Granted, the 1860 census does not list relationships. Matilda Balin might simply be a boarder (she was listed as a teacher). She also would have been old enough to be married.
