Biography

Elizabeth Braden 'Lizzie' Smith, the daughter of Liberty Smith and Elizabeth Braden, was born 15 March 1871 in Milan, Sullivan County, Missouri. She passed away 19 July 1948 in Alva, Woods County, Oklahoma and is buried in the Alva Memorial Cemetery in Alva, Oklahoma.[1]

Her parents, Liberty R. Smith and Elizabeth (Braden) Bartlett, both of Sullivan County, Missouri, were united in marriage on 11 May 1869 in Jackson Township of Sullivan County, Missouri.[2]

In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census of Jackson Township, Sullivan County, Missouri, the family is listed as:

  • Elizabeth Smith, a widow, age 49 from Kentucky,
  • Adison Bartlett, son, age 18 from Missouri,
  • James Bartlett, son, age 16 from Missouri,
  • Elizabeth Smith, daughter, age nine from Missouri, and
  • Oscar P Smith, son, age five from Missouri.[3]

Miss Lizzie B. Smith and Mr. Gus Hadwiger, residents of Alva, Woods County, Oklahoma Territory, were united in marriage on 29 April 1896 in Alva. This record shows that Lizzie was born in Missouri to Robert L Smith and Elizabeth Braden. Gus Hadwiger shows his place of birth as Austria and his parents are listed as August Hadwiger and Lizzie L Heinz.[4]
