Biography

Her name may have been spelled MARIAH. Her mother died when she was 4 years old and she was raised by her aunt, Rachel Bush whose husband was Daniel Boone's cousin. Her mother's maiden name was Thomas. Her father's last name was Franklin (????). She had two brothers: John Smith and Richard Smith. She was a devout member of the baptist Church of Sandy Creek, Illinois for 39 years. According to Pauline Hartenbower Smith, Maria Smith's family was connected with the Daniel Boone settlement at Harrodsburg, KY. She was raised by Aunt Rachel Bush whose parents were killed by Indians. Aunt Rachel was raised by an old Indian herb doctor. After living around Harrodsburg, the family moved to Lexington, KY.
