Biography

Ephraim Smith married Hannah Rice in Shrewsbury on 16 Aug 1733. That was the first marriage recorded in that town.[1]

Note: One secondary source has it differently, saying that Asa Smith, husband of Elizabeth Wheeler, (and definitely the son of this Ephraim,) was the son of Ephraim and Hannah Child Smith.[2]

Ephraim and Hannah Smith had, in Shrewsbury:[3]

  • Aaron, b. 22 June 1736, m. Dinah Wheeler, 4 Aug 1757, died 1825
  • Moses, b. 25 Jan 1738-9, m. Lydia Smith, settled in Barre, died there in 1815, age 76
  • William, b. 30 Jan 1741-2, removed to Barre, married Rebecka Parminter there 3 Oct 1766
  • Asa, b. 1 Oct 1744, m. Elizabeth Wheeler, intentions posted 9 Jun 1764
  • Elisabeth, b. 17 Feb 1748, m. Aaron Temple, 4 June 1765

The secondary source cited on this profile alleges, without citing an underlying source, that Hannah Child was the mother of Asa Smith, from which is inferred that this Hannah married Ephraim Smith-71272. However, I find no vital record of that marriage. Instead, vital records of Shrewsbury show that Ephraim Smith married Hannah Rice-15198 on 16 Aug 1733, followed by the birth of his first son in 1736. I propose, therefore, to shift the mothering of sons Aaron and Asa to Hannah Rice Smith, unless there is additional evidence to the contrary.
