Biography

Anne (Smith) Bolton was a convict after the Third Fleet.

Anne Evan Smith (married name Bolton) was born in 1782 in Wales. [1]

Birthdate derived from 1828 census, in which she is shown as aged 46.

1802 Conviction
She was convicted on 30 March 1802, Brecon Assizes. Breaking and entering, stealing one camlot gown value 10s, one apron value 5s, one silk handerkercheif value 5s and one flannel petticoat value 10s, from Isabella Griffith at the parish of Dwynnock in County of Brecon. Sentenced Brecknock Wales, convicted of theft and sentenced to 7 years transportation. Transported as one of 139 female convicts on the "Experiment I" arrival in Port Jackson, Sydney Cove on 24.6.1804. Three female convicts died on the rough journey. Ann was sent to the Parramatta female factory.[2]

Ann Smith married Robert Bolton by Banns in the Parish of St Philip, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on the 3rd of November 1804 by Samuel Marsden. The spelling of Robert's surname was "Boultin". The witness was James Reun. Both Robert and Ann signed with their mark of an X indicating that they could not write.

Ann Smith, convict per Experiment 1 is recorded as Free, Off Stores and as having five children. Remarks state that she is the wife of R Bolton.The General Muster of NSW records that Robert Bolton, convict per Perseus was Free, Off stores and a landholder somewhere in the district of Windsor, Richmond, or Castlereagh. Also recorded in the 1814 Muster is that Robert Bolton had a convict assigned to him. This convict was John Bingham per convict ship "Earl Spencer" who was Off Stores.

Ann Smith per convict ship "Experiment" is recorded as "Free by Servitude" from her sentence of 7 years. In the muster records, it states that her husband Robert Boulton had a Ticket of Leave and that he had arrived on the convict ship "Perseus" and that he had been sentenced to life in the colony. His occupation was recorded as "Landholder" in Parramatta. Nine children are also listed under his name but only two children have their Christian names recorded and they were Isaac aged 16 and Mary aged 15.

Records that she is the wife of Robert Bolton.In this muster record, Robert Bolton is a Ticket of Leave holder, convict per Perseus 1802, and a landholder of Parramatta. Eight children are listed with ages and names.

Anne Bolton died on 23 August 1839. Stated on her burial certificate is that her abode was Prospect, New South Wales, Australia. No age has been recorded. It is noted that she is a Widow.

Ann Bolton was buried in the same cemetery as her husband Robert on the 25th of August 1839. The burial ceremony was performed at the Parish of St. John Parramatta, County of Cumberland by J Troughton, Church of England.
