ABOUT MARCHINGTON About a mile before Breadalbane is reached, a drive lined with Oaks and Pines, the first road to Cocked Hat Hill, leads to Marchington. The property was originally granted to John Smith in 1821 and he settled there in 1823. The original house has been demolished and a new one built by the current owners, the Grubb family.

John Smith had vines which yielded 5 tons a year and he sent jams and conserves to the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. Mark Jeffrey, the notorious, hot tempered burglar, worked there as a harvest hand to Alex Stewart in the 1880’shttps://ehive.com/account/4357/object/188193

Marchington was granted to John Smith, who arrived in Van Diemans Land an intending settler in 1822. It then consisted of about 2,000 acres.

The house must have been built shortly afterwards and there was a good garden. It is recorded that five tons of graps were gathered yearly from his vineyard. John Smith's son, Richard, is the fathre of Dr. P. D. Smith, at present living in Launceston. Mr. C. B. Grubb purchased Marchington in '84.
