Biography

Martha Mary Smith Barrow was born September 15, 1835. She was the daughter of Gabriel D. Smith, Jr. and Nancy Cain Smith.[1]

On the 1850 Census, Martha was living in the household of her parents and siblings. According to this census, she was born in Georgia. [2]

She married John Turner Barrow on July 13, 1854 in Carroll County, Georgia. [3]

On the 1860 Census, she was living in the household of her husband, John Turner Barrow, and daughter, Elvira Barrow. According to this census, she was born in Georgia and could not read or write. [4]

John Turner Barrow, husband of Martha, died in 1863 while serving during the Civil War. He died in a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

On the 1870 Census, Martha and her two children, Elvira Barrow and James Ransom Barrow, were living in the household of her parents in Carroll County, Georgia. According to this census, she was a widow, could not read or write, and was born in Georgia. [5]

According to the 1880 Census, she was living in Carroll County, Georgia with her son, James Ransom Barrow. She was listed as a widow, was keeping house, and could not read or write. [6]

On the 1900 Census, she was living with her grandson, John Turner Barrow II, in Carroll County, Georgia. According to this census, she was a widow, had one living child, was born in Georgia, and could not read or write. [7]

On the 1910 Census, she was living with her son, James Ransom Barrow, and his family in Buncombe, Haralson County, GA. According to this census, she was a widow, was the mother of two living children, and was born in Georgia. [8]

On the 1920 Census, she was still living in the household of her son, James Ransom Barrow. She was listed as being a widow and having been born in Georgia. According to this census, she was able to read and write. [9]

She died on December 2, 1924 in Haralson County, Georgia. According to her death certificate, she died of an Acute Attack of Chronic Nephritis with a contributory cause of Old Age. The death certificate states that she was buried at Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Carroll County, Georgia. It also states that her parents were Gabriel D. Smith and Nancy Cain.
