Calora was born a twin to Dora, who died on 21 Jan 1917 of a weak heart. When she was a young girl, her father told her that she was needed to travel with soldiers to Maryland and attend to a man. After his passing, she was able to walk back to West Virginia to her family, it was then that explained that she was taking care of his brother. It was after that when she only 8 years old that her father died of Cancer. Calora had many childhood memories she would tell to those around her.
She attended a one room School in Wymer with her siblings, later she married Clarence, a childhood friend. Together they walked from Wymer to Elkins on 18 Dec 1934 in the blistery snow blizzard day. She explained to me that was where the preacher was and in order to be married to one another this is what they had to do. On the way back, a cousin of Clarence was driving his new vehicle, he offered a ride back to Wymer. They sat in the back, caboose area. Upon their return, the vehicle had slid off of the road, and was lodged into a ditch. Clarence stepped out of the vehicle and simply picked up the front of the car and set it into the middle of the road, it was then they were able to return to their home. Clarence loved music, so he attached a radio to a car battery, as there was no electricity, to listen as they lit candles and read the Bible together by candle lite.
There was 8 children born to this Union. One died at birth, Martha, who was named after Martha Louella (Carr) Elza, grandmother to Clarence, who cared for him after his parents died when he was a toddler.
Calora worked for the hospital in Elkins while her husband Clarence stayed home with their children, as his health had deteriorated for many years.
After his death, on Easter, in 1979, she traveled to her children's homes and visited with them and their children. Calora had health issues that required surgeries, however, that did not stop her from spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Many five generation photos had been taken!
She remained a widow until her death on Valentines Day, 2007 after a fall on ice, a broken hip and ribs, the final result being internal bleeding. Although her Certificate of Death states Congestive Heart Failure.
Her funeral was held on a snowy, ice filled day, after her service, they were unable to bury her for several days due to the frozen ground, ice and snow . [1][2]
