Pennina Smith Frost
(1794-1869)
Pennina (Peninah) Smith Frost was born 1 February 1794 in Wayne County, North Carolina, to John and Margaret Brown Smith. There were five children in the Smith family, three girls and two boys: Nancy, Stephen, Jesse, and Fereba who married Mr. Clapp. Pennina was the fourth child. Her mother died giving birth to a sixth child who also died.
After the death of her mother, she went to live with an aunt. When the aunt also died, Pennina made her home with James and Isabel (Isabella) Frost, who were probably old friends of her parents. She remained in the Frost family until she was about sixteen years of age. Then she married their son, McCaslin, 28 November 1809. Their two oldest children were born in Wake County, North Carolina. Then the Frosts moved to Knox County, Tennessee, where the rest of their eight children were born. (See McCaslin Frost’s biography for details of their family history including their conversion to the Church.) Pennina Frost is listed as being in attendance when Joseph Smith organized the Relief Society above his store in Nauvoo.
McCaslin and Pennina entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1861 with the William E. McKessock Wagon Company. She was sixty-seven years old. They made their home in their last years with their daughter, Martha Frost Akes Langley Wiser in Richmond, Cache County, Utah. She died in Richmond 8 September 1869 and is buried in the Richmond Cemetery. [1]
