Note: Her husband Nathaniel P. Handley died just six years after they married. To my knowledge, Sarah Joanna Halsted Handley was their only child who lived to adulthood. It's possible that Joanna Halsted Smith Handley remarried, but I can find no documentation supporting that yet. I can also not find any information about her death, but if she remarried, then that's not surprising, since she would have probably been buried under her subsequent husband's surname.
Daughter of James Barnes Craig and Anna Turk Carroll, his wife.
Granddaughter of William Craig and Sarah Joanna Handley, his wife.
Gr.-granddaughter of Oliver Handley and Joanna Smith, his wife.
Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of Samuel Smith and Sarah Halsted, his wife.
Gr.-gr. -gr.-granddaughter of Caleb Halsted and Rebecca Ogden (1729-1806), his wife, m. 1744.
Caleb Halsted, (1721-84), was a patriot and his sons Caleb, William and Robert served in the army.
Also Nos. 27490, 34264.
Here's the reverse order, from Patriot Caleb Halsted, with my comments:
Caleb Halsted and Rebecca Ogden (1729-1806), his wife, m. 1744.
His daughter Sarah Halsted and her husband Samuel Smith
Her daughter Joanna Halsted Smith married Oliver Handley[4]
Her daughter Sarah Joanna Handley married William Craig [5]
Her son James Barnes Craig [6] married Anna Turk Carroll[7]
Clearly both sources may have discrepancies, but the line of descent is almost identical. It also may explain where the "Barnes" name came into the picture, and someone retelling the family story mixed it up a bit.
The same line of descent as per WikiTree records:
Caleb Halsted married Rebecca Ogden
His daughter Sarah Halsted married Samuel Smith
Her daughter Joanna Halsted Smith married Nathaniel P. Handley
Her daughter Sarah Joanna Handley married James Craig (before she married David McIntire, father of the three McIntire sisters)
Her son James Barnes Craig married Mary Augusta Carroll
Maybe Anna and Mary Carroll were sisters and their husbands were confused in one of these records?
I am searching for all the individuals listed in this entry to see if I can make any connections.

↑ This had to be her second husband; first husband was Nathaniel P. Handley and Sarah Joanna Handley was actually his daughter, not Oliver Handley's daughter.
↑ Perhaps also referred to in other documents as James Craig.
↑ Already claimed to be a son of Sarah Joanna Handley,
↑ One source refers to her as May Augusta Carroll.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joanna by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joanna:
Smith-96996 and Smith-76421 appear to represent the same person because: Looks like these two are duplicates. Same dates, parents, and names. If you'll approve the match, I'm happy to do the merging of the profiles. If you prefer to do the merge yourself, I completely understand. Thanks for your help with this.
