Biography

Bio on Find A Grave Memorial # 136164339 for Dicey: No headstone for Dicey Elizabeth Smith Corley Hamilton Higgins has been found. However, family research suggests she’s buried near her young daughter Adar A. and Thomas Jefferson Hamilton, her second husband. Also in Mount Carmel cemetery is her younger brother, Joseph Smith. Dicey is the daughter of Anquilla Lee and Daniel Smith, whose families had moved to Arkansas by 1850. Dicey Elizabeth Smith married Leroy Corley when she was 15 and had two children before Leroy died during the Civil War after serving as a Corporal in the Union Regiment, Company H Arkansas 1st Infantry. Her second husband served as a Private in a Union regiment during the Civil War, Company A Arkansas 4th Cavalry Regiment. Their marriage in 1867 soon welcomed three girls and two boys; joining Dicey’s son and daughter with Leroy Corley. Thomas Jefferson Hamilton died of consumption in 1879 before the medical community realized tuberculosis was contagious. Dicey entered a third marriage with John Higgins on September 10, 1885, with no issue; a few years before her death December 23, 1888.
