Ancestry has Chester E. Smith, b 8 Apr 1883, d 19 Jan 1903 as Edward's son. Can find no proof of this. Not on any census records with family, should be on 1900 and isn't.

Edward L. Smith. Another veteran of the Civil War Answers to the Last Roll Call
Edward L. Smith aged 56 years and 11 months died at his home on Main St. between Cortland and Homer, Thursday of heart failure. Mr Smith's heart had been troubling him for two or three weeks and the end was not unexpected. Mr Smith was a native of Smithville, but had lived in this vicinity for a number of years. He was a veteran of the Civil War, Co F One Hundred Eighty Fifth regiment and well liked by all who knew him. He worked in the factory of the Carriage Goods Co. in this city. He leaves a wife (Mary), two sons, Fred of Taylor and Willis of Cortland, also two daughters, Mrs Bled (Charles Bird) Hyer and Mrs William Bort, both of this city.
The Funeral will be held from his late home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock and from the First Methodist church at 3 o'clock.
