Smith:

Biography

      • I am certain of this man being James father, but uncertain of who Nicol Smith's father was.

Nicol was born in 1747. Nicol Smith married Catherine Sinclair 23 Nov 1767, shown in Dunrossness Parish & also in Sandwick & Cunningsburgh Parish, Shetland. Note it was usual in Scotland at that time to show the Parish of the groom & the Parish of the bride. This is why so often the marriage dates differ at this time - with one showing one month & the other showing another month. Guess it depended on when the other chap got time to note it down. [1]

      • Note: from Tony Gott - "I have been working with a researcher on the population of Shetland, along with the births each year from when records started. In 1851 there were 682 births in the parish records, for a population of about 30,000 people. In 1750, if we assume a reduced population of 25,000 then you would expect that there would be about 568 births.

The actual number noted in the parish records was 145. Therefore only 1 in 4 births appeared in the parish records. It is most likely that Catherine was one of the 3 out the 4 who was not recorded."

Unfortunately, there are many more with this name born about the same time which is confusing for all of us.
Whoever changed the name to Whiteness, it is not correct. Please see the following site:
