John Smith was an American attorney, politician and railroad businessman.
John Smith was born on August 12, 1879, Barre, Worchester County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Deacon Samuel Smith and Patience Gregory Smith[1] [3] In 1800 his family moved to Saint Albans, Franklin County, Vermont.
John Smith studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1810. He practiced law in Saint Albans. [3]
From 1823 to 1832, Smith was the State's Attorney for Franklin County. From 1827 to 1837, Smith was a member of the Vermont House of Representatvies. From 1831 to 1833, he was speaker of the House. [4]
Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives to the 26th Congress, serving the 4th District of Vermont. In 1840, he was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection. [4]
After leaving office, Smith returned to the practice of law. He became involved in the railroad business. He helped establish the Vermont and Canada Railroad. [5] [6]
Smith received an honorary Master of Arts degree from the University of Vermont. [6]
In 1814, John Smith married Maria Waitstill Curtis. They had seven children. One child, John Gregory Smith was Governor of Vermont. Another son, Worthington Curtis Smith was a Congressman from Vermont. Smith was the grandfather of Edward Curtis Smith, a Governor of Vermont.
John Smith died on November 26, 1858. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Saint Albans, Franklin County, Vermont. [3]
