Biography

Jacob was born in Roanoke, Alabama on 31 July 1870 to Abraham Smith and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Snyder Smith. [1]

On the 1870 Census, Jacob Smith (aka on this census as Rufus Smith) was living in Randolph County, Alabama with his parents, Abraham/Abram Smith and Elizabeth Snyder Smith. [2]Others in the household were: Sarah Smith, Mary Smith, and Frances Smith. Sarah Smith was a sister or half-sister of Jacob Smith. I'm not sure of the connection of Mary and Frances Smith, but the assumption is that they are also sisters.

On the 1880 Census, Jacob Smith (aka on this census Jacob Hanks) is living in the household of his mother, Elizabeth Snyder Smith.[3] His sister, Sally/Sarah Smith Hanks, and her two children are also living in the household. Jacob B. Smith's mother is listed as divorced on this census. The whereabouts of Jacob's father, Abraham, are not known at this time.

Jacob Smith married Josephine Ann "Josie" Brooks around 1890 (according to the 1900 Census [4]) in Alabama. Josephine died sometime before 15 Aug 1906. They had four children: James T. Smith, Jacob Wesley Smith, Mary Smith, and Jesse Jackson Smith.

In 1899, Jacob signed a marriage bond with his nephew, John W. Hanks, in Marshall County, Alabama. John W. Hanks married Lee Ola Brooks, sister of Jacob's wife, Josephine Ann Brooks.[5]

According to the 1900 Census, Jacob Smith and his wife, Josie/Josephine Brooks Smith, were living in Marshall County, Alabama with three of their children: James T. Smith, Jacob Wesley Smith, and Mary Smith. Jacob Breckinridge Smith's mother, Elizabeth Snyder Smith, was also living with the family.[4]

On 15 Aug 1906, Jacob B. Smith married Eliza Ellen Crawford Brookshire in Fulton County, Georgia.[6] They had three daughters; Ruby Smith, Lillie Ann Smith, and Rosie Irene Smith.

On the 1910 Census, Jacob B. Smith was living in Waco, Haralson County, Georgia.[7] Also living in the household were his wife, Eliza, and children: James T. Smith, Jacob Wesley Smith, Mary Smith, Jessie Jackson Smith, Ruby Smith, and Lillie Smith. He also had three stepchildren living with him: Jessie William Brookshire, Lydia Marion Brookshire, and Milton Monroe Brookshire. Jacob was working as a farmer at the time.

According to the 1920 Census, Jacob B. Smith was living in Bremen, Haralson County, Georgia.[8] Also in the household were Eliza Crawford Smith, his wife, and three children: Ruby Smith, Lillie Smith, and Rosie Irene Smith. There was also a boarder in the household named Walter M. Smith; it is unknown if he was a relative to the family or not at this time. He was working as a merchant in a meat market which he owned in Bremen, Georgia.

On the 1930 Census, Jacob B. Smith was living in Bremen, Haralson County, Georgia with his wife, Eliza Ellen Crawford Smith.[9] Their two youngest daughters, Lillie Ann Smith and Rosie Irene Smith, were living with them. They were also raising their granddaughter, Lura Ellen Hendrix/Smith, daughter of Ruby Smith Davis. They were living next door to daughter Ruby Smith Davis and her family. Jacob Smith was working as a farmer.

Jacob B. Smith ran for County Coroner in Haralson County, Georgia in 1932. A newspaper article appeared in the Haralson County Tribune in Buchanan, Georgia on 7 Apr 1932 stating that he had won the election.[10]

According to the 1940 Census, Jacob B. Smith was living in Bremen, Haralson County, Georgia with his wife, Eliza Ellen Crawford Smith, and granddaughter, Lura Ellen Hendrix Smith.[11] Jacob was working as a farmer.

He passed away on 4 Mar 1957 in Smyrna, Cobb County, Georgia. He was a patient in Brawner's Sanitorium at the time of his death. According to his death certificate [1], he died of Cerebral Arteriosclerosis and Thrombosis due to Senility. He was buried at Bremen City Cemetery in Bremen, Haralson County, Georgia.[12]

Jacob B. Smith's will was probated in Buchanan, Haralson County, Georgia in April 1957. [13]He left all of his assets equally divided among all of his children by Josephine Ann "Josie" Brooks Smith and his stepchildren by Eliza Ellen Crawford Brookshire Smith.

Sometime between 1900 and 1906, Eliza's first husband, Levi Brookshire, died. She was left alone with three small children to care for. Sadly none of her family or Levi's family could or would help her, and she ended up placing her children into an orphanage. In 1906, she married Jacob Breckinridge Smith, and after they were married, they went to the orphanage to get her children and bring them home. Jacob had four children of his own, so they started out with seven children. They later had three children of their own.

This was told to me by my grand-aunt, Lydia Brookshire, who was one of the children that Eliza was forced to place into an orphanage. Sadly, Aunt Liddie had a difficult time forgiving her mother for placing her in the orphanage even though she came back to get her children.
