She married JOSIAH SMITH 07 Oct 1841 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.He was born 15 Apr 1818 in Colerain, Bedford, Pennsylvania, and died 02 Apr 1871 in Cumberland Valley, Bedford, Pennsylvania.

  • When Josiah Smith died, custody of his minor children: Rachel Ellen William, and Ruth Ann Smith, was given to George W. Cessna, Sep of 1871. Cessna posted $3,000. Note: It appears that Josiah Smith, born 1832, age 38, died in May 1870 of Consumption at Waterford, Erie County, PA. But the guardianship was filed in Bedford County, so he owned property in Bedford. George W. Cessna was the son of William M. and Rachel Morgart-Cessna.

[1] Obituary Mrs Rebecca Smith, widow of Josiah Smith,died in Rainsburg at the home of her son Fred Smith, on Friday, aged 79 years.For many years she lived near Centreville.Her husband died 32 years ago.In 1895 she mad her home with her son Fred and has resided with him ever since.
Eleven children survive her, namely, Mrs Laura Slinger, Mrs Rachel Fisher, Mrs Mary Hardman, Mrs Reuben Smith, Joseph Smith and William Smith of Cumberland Valley;M B Smiht of Bedford; Mrs Martha Whipp, of Cumberland;Mrs Clara Elder of stat of Indiana; Mrs Hugh McClintic, of Ohio and Fred Smith of Rainsburg.She was a sister of the late Hon. John Cessna and Mrs Mary Bowles, of Bradford; Mrs Tena Cunningham, of Enid; GeorgeW., Joseph and William Cessna of Rainsburg;Thomas Cessna of Grinnell, Ia., and Hon. J. B. Cessna of Hastings, Neb..
The funeral services were held on Monday at the Lutheran church in Cumberland Valley,Rev. E H Jones os Schellsburg, officiating.Mrs Smith was a good woman and her death is mourned by a large number of friends.
[2]The following was taken form the Bedford (Pa.) Inquirer:Mrs Rebecca E. Smith was born in Friend's Cove, Bedford County, March 23, 1824 and died April 10, 1903, aged 79 years and 18 days. Her maiden name was Cessna. She was united in Marriage with Josiah Smith, on the 7th day of October, 1841.Her husband preceded her 32 years ago to the spirit world.She was left with a family of eleven children, five sons and six daughters, all of whom survive her, and all are living within a radius of a few miles of the old home, except Mrs. H J Elder, who resides in Terra Hautte, Indiana, and Mrs. Rev. H. McClintock , of Ohio City, Ohio.She was a member of the Luthern church for sixty years, and was a faithful follower of the blessed Master.She was a kind, loving mother, alwaysready tolend a helping hand to her family and all others.She was a kind neighbor and always ready to assist the poor and needy.She was held in high esteem in the community in which she lived as was verified by the large concours of relatives, friends and neighbors that followed her to her last resting place.She was an intense sufferer for the past ten years, but she bore her sufferings patiently, always looking to higher power for strength and comfort during her illness.All was done for her that her children and kind friends could do.the funeral sermon was preached by her pastor, Rev. Jones, from the text--"Be ye also ready."Our loss is her eternal gain.
