Biography

Beulah Maude Smith was born on November 13, 1908, in Sumner, Gratiot, Michigan, to William Frederick Smith and Maude Inez Skinner. "When she was still an infant, her parents changed her name to "Nina Beatrice", probably in honor of her maternal grandmother. She was known affectionately as "Bea" or "Nina" throughout her life. Her parents did not file paperwork to officially change her name and she discovered that her name was still officially "Beulah Maude, when she filed for Social Security in her 60's.

By 1910 the family moved to Castleton, Barry, Michigan, where Bea's father operated a general store. The 1930 census shows the family living in Prairieville, Barry, MI.

As a child, Bea contracted Rhuematic Fever and suffered damage to her heart. In her early 20's she became ill while studying to become a nurse. She was found to have a brain tumor and the tumor was successfully removed at the University of Michigan. Brain tumor surgery was in its infancy, at the time, and she was very fortunate to have had a positive outcome. She did not finish her nurses training and suffered ill health and general weakness due to the Rhuematic Fever and brain tumor surgery, throughout her life.

She attended Barry County rural schools and Hastings High School for three years. She graduated from Richland High School.

She married Richard Edward Johnson on September 2, 1935, in Prairieville, Michigan. They lived in Kalamazoo for 10 years, then moved to a farm in East Orangeville Township, until his death in 1982. They had two children during their marriage. She died on October 25, 1990, in Lapeer, Michigan, at the age of 81, and was buried in Prairieville Cemetery, in Barry County, Michigan, near many family members.
