Biography
Mack Shannon Smith (December 26, 1887 - September 13, 1954) was a family man and hard working farmer born in Carroll County, Arkansas. As his family grew he moved his family to south-central Idaho where he could support his large family and give them more opportunities for better lives.
"Dad's name was Mack Shannon Smith. Signed his name as MS Smith, always went by Shannon. Never heard him called Mack."[2]
Note that Mack Shannon Smith's middle name is sometimes misspelled in some references as Shannen.[3]
Life in Arkansas
Shannon Smith signed a Marriage License on January 20, 1909(image reference) and married Alta Irenea Webb January 21, 1909 in Carroll County Arkansas.[4]
Migration to Idaho
With the opening of canals and irrigation of southern Idaho bringing water to the fertile desert, Shannon Smith decided to join xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Family Life
Over the years, Shannon and Alta had 8 children....
Mack Shannon Smith loved his large family. (More to add here from writings of Agnes Smith King)
Evening entertainment was often listening to the radio. The family often followed "Amos and Andy," "Intersanctum" and "???". Shannon taught the children to make toys such as "tractors" made from sewing thread bobbins and nails.
On the Farm
Farming life was difficult especially before the introduction of motorized farm machines. Shannon always had large, strong work horses that he used to plow, harrow and cultivate the fields. He felt proud of the way he matched and trained the big animals and how he outfitted them with the finest harnesses. His children would often run out to great the team at the end of the day so that they could ride the broad backs of team back to the stables.
Southern Idaho was hot and dry in the summer with plenty of irrigation water, perfect weather for Shannon's favorite crop, Mexican red beans. He took pride in his crops and how he made the rows straight.
As were his habits, Shannon would take a canvas bag of water with him to the fields. Because of the porosity of the canvas, water would seep through and evaporate thus cooling the water inside.
Introduction of Technology
During his life, Shannon Smith saw advances in technology that he found astounding.
Before there were farm tractors Shannon worked large work horses ...more here. The first tractor bought by Shannon was a FarmAll tractor with large cleats on the wheels so as not to compact the soil.
