Sources

  • Grace Jenkins Johnson, great-granddaughter of Joseph Smith and Vashti Wells, as interviewed extensively on video by Joseph and Vashti's great-granddaughter Eleanor Stockman Simonds. The video footage is in the possession of many descendants of Joseph and Vashti's daughter Emma. Joseph and Vashti's marriage date along with the birth and death dates of the couple and their children were among photocopied papers provided by Gracie some years before the interviews.
  • Recollections of grandchild Nettie Lee Stockman Richmond (transcribed and linked to various trees at Ancestry.com) reiterate the dates provided by Gracie (above) and describe his death as follows: "Joseph Smith fought in the Civil War and there he contracted typhoid fever. He came home and died 15 July 1863. The last three of the children contracted the fever from him and died. Samanthy died 16 July 1863 and was buried in the same coffin as her father. Aby died 23 July 1863. Kenneth McKenzy died 27 Aug 1863."
  • Paternal and Maternal relationships are both confirmed by an autosomal GEDmatch comparison between Edna (Stockman) Prouty , GEDmatch kit # A257419, and BM, GEDmatch kit # T913814, (compare kits), her 3rd cousin . Their most-recent common ancestors are Basil Smith and Malinda Simmons, the great great grandparents of both Edna (Stockman) Prouty and BM. Predicted relationship from GEDmatch: 3C group, based on sharing 79.3 cM across 4 segments. Note that multiple other relationships and triangulations of these common ancestors exist.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
