Biography

There is presently not a basis for the commonly seen 1539 year of birth for Robert Smyth, the spelling found in Wilmslow parish registers of the period.

A Robert Smyth married a Sibell ____le (indecipherable in the original register) on 28 Nov 1563 at Wilmslow, Cheshire.[1]

A Robert Smyth "of Stanneyland" was buried 7 Aug 1590 at Wilmslow, Cheshire.[2] The burial record notes he was "of Stanneyland" (See Research Notes on Stanilance/Stanneyland)

Possible Children

Based on the range of dates of baptisms found in the Wilmslow registers with Robert Smyth as father, it seems possible that there are two men of this name. Baptisms range from 1565 to 1602 at which time this Robert was likely deceased.

Research Notes

The spellings "Robart" and "Smithe" do not seem to appear in any of the Wilmslow parish register entries found to date. The surname is found as Smyth in the parish register. Various unsourced online sites give DOBs ranging 1538-1539 in Styal or Stanilance. Stanilance is also known as Stanneyland and is a small locality within Wilmslow parish about a mile north of Wilmslow village proper and does not appear on most modern maps. One site appears to give as a source: Genealogical Aids Bulletin: Quaker Pearsons, Vol. 23 nr 3, Page 63, author Corine Hanna Diller, repository: Genealogical Forum of Oregon. The issue is available as microfilm at FHCs or at the Indiana State Library in hard copy.

There is no Bradbury in Cheshire though he is sometimes seen as of Bradbury. Is this meant to be Bredbury which is about 8 miles from Wilmslow?

The following are older research Notes from this profile:

Father may have been William Smith of Sutton or Sutton Leach, or John Smith and Alice Muttlebury and a descendant of the Carrington family of Cheshire.[citation needed] More research needed.

Robart Smithe (of Bradbury in Cheshire) - Precolonial Smiths
Born 1539 Styall, Wilmslow Parish, Cheshire, England. Note: there does not appear to be a documented basis for a Robert Smyth born Styal in 1539.

It was probably added by Kitty Cooper Smith. Listed under Research Notes is the followig, "There is no Bradbury in Cheshire; is this meant to be Bredbury which is about 8 miles from Wilmslow?"

Jack, do you know where the "of Bradbury" originates? It seems unusual since he appears to have lived and died in Wilmslow and I don't see a place name Bradbury associated with him so far.
