Gilbert Haven Smith was born in 1882 and died in 1959. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was a contemporary of noted Pennsylvania landscape impressionist Daniel Garber.
His primary career path led him to the ministry of the New Church (officially know as the General Church of the New Jerusalem), with Glenview, Illinois as his final pastorate in the 1940s. During his working life he painted a number of landscapes, also beach scenes at Lake Michigan. There is a family ancedote, that as a minister, Gilbert Haven Smith often gave one of his paintings as a wedding gift to couples whose ceremonies he officiated.
