When Emma Delancy Smith was born on January 24, 1844, in New York, her father, Joel, was 30 and her mother, Mary, was 23. She married Thomas Wilbur Burd on May 16, 1865. They had seven children in 15 years. She died on November 22, 1905, in Yonkers, New York, at the age of 61, and was buried in the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
She was one of the first females to practice medicine in the State of New York.
