Biography

James was the son of James's father James Smith and Mary Atherton.[1] For the sake of clarity, he is referred to as James, Jr.

He married Sarah Atherton on 20 May 1733 in Lancaster, Massachusetts.[2] They had children:

  1. Oliver,
  2. Elisha,
  3. James,
  4. Sarah,
  5. Jeams,
  6. Keziah,
  7. Mary
  8. Zubah

James was one of the 30 or so founders of Sharon in Litchfield County, Connecticut. They subsequently moved into nearby Nine Partners in Dutchess Co., New York.

James and his wife and children, while living in Nine Partners, Dutchess County, New York, were regularly visited by the Moravian minister from the Sichem-in-the-Oblong settlement begining 1 Aug 1765, to which congregation James and Sarah were admitted in 1766. The last mention of James is in the lists of members of the Moravian congregation in 1769. His brothers Azariah and Theophilus were both members, with Azariah being a founding member and communicant.
